The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has opened applications for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant for March 2025. Eligible individuals requiring financial assistance can now apply.

Who Qualifies for the SRD Grant?

To qualify for the SRD grant in South Africa, applicants must meet specific criteria. They must be South African citizens, residents, or hold a special permit. Additionally, they must not receive other government support, such as UIF benefits or NSFAS bursaries. Applicants' monthly income must be below R624, and their bank account balance must be less than R624.

How Sassa Verifies Eligibility For The SRD Grant

Sassa conducts verification checks monthly to ensure applicants are eligible for an SRD grant payment.

The Department of Home Affairs verifies identity and citizenship, while the Department of Treasury verifies income using bank details. Once eligibility is confirmed, Sassa proceeds with payments, which are typically made at the end of each month.

How to Apply for the SRD Grant

To apply for the SRD grant, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the SRD grant website.
  2. Choose your citizenship status at the bottom of the webpage. Select "South African ID Holder" or "Asylum Seeker/Special Permit Holder."
  3. Locate the yellow bar labelled "Click here to apply online" under the relevant section ("How do I apply for this SRD Grant" or "Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders").
  4. Enter your mobile number and click "Send SMS." Then, input the one-time pin (OTP) sent by Sassa to your phone for verification.
  5. Once verified, follow the prompts on the website to complete your application.

Approved recipients can choose to receive their SRD grant payments directly into their bank accounts or collect the funds at participating supermarkets, including Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, USave, Shoprite, OK, and Spar.
