Since it's introduction, the Sassa Special Relief of Distress (SRD) grant has been highly sought-after. Now, after two years, the grant is set to come to an end this coming March leaving citizens to call for an extension of the grant.
With this in mind, there are criminals spreading fake news on social media trying to fish vulnerable South Africans and get them to offer up personal information.
The latest fake news being spread was that of a R700 grant being introduced in March with the message saying, "The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has approved the payment of R700".
It continued to say that these Sassa grant payments of R700 will be paid in February until March saying that over 575 000 citizens will receive it as "part of SASSA 2022 budget to support all South Africa Citizen".
The fake message also contained a link which would then be used to register and apply. Everyone should beware of these types of messages and clicking on unfamiliar links which would then lead you to divulge personal information.
To this fake news, Sassa has responded:
Please note that the below advert is FAKE and does not come from SASSA. No additional grant type is offered apart from the ones announced by SASSA.
Sassa currently provides the R350 grant to vulnerable South Africans who are unemployed and have no other source of income. The grant is set to come to an end next month in March. This means that applications will close but payments will however continue for missing payments up until March.
