Words of congratulations have been flowing in for the 572,983 learners who recently obtained their matric qualification. The grade 12 class of 2023 achieved a pass rate of 82.9%, the highest percentage recorded in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.
President Cyril Ramaphosa praised the unprecedented success recorded by the Matric Class of 2023 as evidence of the determination and ambition of learners and of a nation that values its youth.
The Class of 2023 has given itself and the nation great cause for pride and belief that our investment in education is the key to moving our country forward.
The president said the matric results serve as an irrefutable indicator of the country’s comprehensive national development during the 30 years of freedom and democracy.
Our success in education must motivate us to achieve even greater things in all areas of our development.

Apply For NSFAS Bursaries To Fund Tertiary Education
Many of the learners who recently obtained their NSC qualification will want to pursue tertiary education. Financial constraints often prevent young people from pursuing their tertiary education goals.
These students are encouraged to apply for tertiary education funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
NSFAS comprehensive bursaries to students enrolled in approved courses at Universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. The main criterion for NSFAS bursaries is having a household income not exceeding R350,000.
Students planning on studying at a university or TVET college are encouraged to apply for NSFAS bursaries before the 2024 application deadline.

NSFAS continues to prepare for the 2024 academic year. We are pleased to confirm that to date over 1,4 Million applications for funding have since been received, with almost 1 million more applications anticipated.
If students do apply for NSFAS bursaries, they are reminded to submit a NSFAS Consent Form to complete their NSFAS application. The Consent Form should be uploaded once completed.
It is mandatory for NSFAS to verify the employment status and income level of the parents, guardians, or spouses of the applicant for eligibility. This includes applicants whose current Application Statuses are, "Awaiting Evaluation, Financial Eligibility, and Application in Progress
Individuals who don’t qualify for a NSFAS bursary may be able to apply for a NSFAS student loan. This is a new offering from NSFAS and looks to assist students from missing middle backgrounds.
Development of the loan scheme eligibility criteria and conditions for funding is currently underway; details on the commencement of the application process for the loan scheme for the 2024 academic year will duly be communicated.
The application period for the NSFAS bursary will close on 31 January 2024.
