The National Student Financial Aid Scheme’s (NSFAS) 2025 application period is now open. Students around South Africa have begun submitting funding allocations for the 2025 academic year.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. These bursaries cover tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.

NSFAS 2025 applications officially opened on Friday, 20 September 2024 and will close on 15 December 2024 Closing date. This gives students over 80 days to apply for NSFAS bursaries and student loans.
NSFAS is the only tool we have at our disposal for the total liberation of the children of historically disadvantaged people in our country.
South African citizens and Permanent Residents with a combined household income of less than R350,000 per year are eligible for the NSFAS bursary. SASSA grant recipients qualify automatically.
For those who do not meet the bursary criteria, the NSFAS loan scheme is available for students from families earning between R350,000 and R600,000 annually.
NSFAS urged students to provide accurate information, especially regarding parental income, when applying for NSFAS funding.
When NSFAS Will Make Funding Decisions
NSFAS will prioritise immediate funding decisions for SASSA recipients and first-time entering students.
The government bursary scheme hopes to finalise all NSFAS funding decisions by 31 December 2024.
About NSFAS 2025 Applications
NSFAS administrator Freeman Nomvalo said the application system has been improved and updated to provide a smoother experience for applicants during the 2025 application period.
He emphasised the importance of uploading all necessary documents after submitting the NSFAS application, as funding can only be granted once these documents are received.
Grade 12 learners do not have to wait until they receive their matric exam results to apply for NSFAS. They have encouraged all learners to apply for NSFAS funding.
