The National Benchmark Tests, also known as NBTs, are assessments designed for first-year applicants into higher education institutions. These tests are designed to measure the student’s ability to transfer understanding of Academic Literacy, Mathematics, and Quantitive Literacy to the demands of tertiary coursework.
These tests will be administered in a secure online environment, where students will be monitored throughout the assessment to ensure that they follow the proper testing procedures.
The entire test will be recorded, so students are reminded to comply with the test rules and requirements to avoid the invalidation of their test.
The NBTs may be done on any laptop or computer, however, it needs to meet the minimum device requirements. Click here to view the minimum device requirements.
Students will be required to download the Lockdown Browser software onto their device and may be prompted for the admin password.
During the test, students will be able to communicate with a consult via a chat function in real-time, therefore a microphone is not compulsory.
The online test session start times will be communicated to all students for each session. However, most of the tests which take place in the morning begin at 9 am and afternoon sessions begin at 2 pm. Students are requested to log in 30 minutes before the start time to allow the Lockdown Browser to download.
Each test has a duration of 3 hours, so students are encouraged to keep their devices charged to avoid battery failure during the test. If the device shuts down, the student will be exited from the session.
Students are also reminded to have sufficient data available, as each test requires more than 500MB to complete.
Students are encouraged to complete the tests in a quiet room with a blank wall behind them and good lighting. Their laptop or computer camera should be operational and facing the student at all times, otherwise, their session may be invalidated. During the test, students may check that their camera is functioning properly and that their face is visible in the photo panel on the screen.
Students may only have the following with them in the test:
- A piece of paper
- Pen or pencil
- Water bottle or another liquid refreshment.
Cell phones, books, calculators, and smartwatches are strictly prohibited during the test. If these are picked up by the system, the test session will be invalidated.
Before you apply you will need the following items:
