The Minister for the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Siviwe Gwarube, announced that the Class of 2024 has achieved a matric pass rate of 87.3%. This is an increase of 4.4% from the 82.9% achieved by the class of 2023.
47.8% of the matriculants achieved a Bachelors Pass in 2024, an increase from last year’s 40% and is the highest number of Bachelors Passes in recent history, the Minister revealed. 67% of these Bachelor Passes come from poorer communities.
Kwazulu-Natal achieved the highest number of Bachelor Passes with over 84 000 matric reaching this achievement. Gauteng received over 66 000 Bachelor Passes and Eastern Cape received over 45 000 Bachelor Passes.
Free State once again came out on top as the province with the highest matric pass rate in South Africa.
At a provincial level, I’m pleased to announce that every province improved on it’s performance from 2023 and every province has achieved above 84% pass rate.

The 2024 final matric exams kicked off on Monday, 21 October, and ended on the 28th of November. 832 993 public school candidates sat down to write their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams in 2024 for 150 subjects.
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020, the Matric Class of 2024 commenced with their high school careers in grade 8. Gwarube commended the 2024 matric top achievers for their resilience and determination.
The Matric Class of 2024 has faced immense challenges, from Covid-19 that disrupted their learning to the evolving budget pressures being felt by various provincial departments and schools to social ills. Despite these challenges, we have seen the highest rate of learners enrolled for grade 12 since the start of Covid-19.
School Performance Report 2024
While the Minister announced the provincial results, and also congratulated the top learners in each subject and quintile, she did not announce results per school. The School Performance Report details the Matric results performance of each school in the country.

Matriculants all over South Africa will head to their exam centres tomorrow morning to collect their matric results, which will be available from 10am. Matrics can also access their matric results on the Department of Basic Education website.
IEB Matric Results
16 304 learners registered to sit for the 2024 IEB National Senior Certificate exams, made up of 14 990 full-time and 1 314 part-time candidates, at 275 examination centres across the country.
The IEB announced that the IEB Class of 2024 achieved a matric pass rate of 98.47%.
