The Independent Examinations Board (IEB), an independent South African examination agency responsible for private school exams, has released its 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam results.

While the IEB achieved excellent results, some learners may want to improve their matric exam results. IEB matric exam remarks are now open and will close on 1 February. Matric remark results will then released on 1 March.

Learners can also enrol in the May/June IEB Matric rewrite exams.

Until When Can Learners Register For May/June IEB Matric Exams?

Learners qualifying for the May/June examination matric rewrites have until 15 March 2024 to enrol.

It's important to note that only learners who qualify to participate in the May/June supplementary exams will be able to register. They will also need to register before the date set by the IEB.

Who Qualifies For IEB Supplementary Exams?

To qualify for the IEB National Senior Certificate Supplementary Exams, learners must have legitimately missed one or more exam papers due to illness or trauma. They can also rewrite if they need a maximum of two subjects to obtain the NSC, achieve a higher category of achievement, or fulfil entry requirements for higher education institutions, providing evidence from the relevant institution.

Candidates are allowed to rewrite only the subjects they previously took in the end-of-year examination. If a candidate missed exams due to illness or a family death, they can register for the supplementary examination.

If a learner doesn't meet the minimum requirements for the NSC but needs a maximum of two subjects, they can register for the supplementary examination in the following year. Part-time candidates can do this only once, after completing their final end-of-year examination.

Candidates can combine subjects based on current National Senior Certificate requirements when repeating subjects. The candidate's performance in seven subjects will be considered, provided it meets program requirements.

If a candidate fails to meet higher education faculty requirements, they may register for the IEB supplementary examination in the year following the end-of-year examination in a maximum of two subjects.

Candidates with one requirement short of meeting admission requirements or those who qualify for admission but don't satisfy faculty or occupational requirements are eligible. Candidates involved in examination irregularities may be provisionally enrolled for the supplementary examination pending investigation outcomes.

Those unable to write or complete the end-of-year examination with a valid reason can write the supplementary examination for specific question papers missed, or the entire subject if absent for one or more question papers.

Internal assessments from the Grade 12 year will be used to meet internal assessment and external examination requirements

How To Register For An IEB Supplementary Exam

Registration can be completed on the IEB’s online registration platform www.ieb-online.co.za.  Applicants  will be required to make payment through the online platform.
A fee per subject is payable.  The fees are determined on an annual basis will be available on the registration platform. The fees for the May examination are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
