The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, commonly known as the R370 grant, provides essential support for unemployed citizens in South Africa, helping them purchase food and pay for other basic needs.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) said approximately 10 million people apply for grants monthly. However, not all applicants are approved for a R370 grant payment.
A rejected SRD grant application decision can be appealed if the applicant believes Sassa was incorrect in rejecting the application.
This article explains how to submit a R370 grant appeal for September 2024.
Who Qualifies for the R370 Grant?
Before submitting a R370 grant appeal, it's helpful to know the R370 grant eligibility criteria.
To qualify for the R370 grant, individuals must be between 18 and 59 years old and must be unemployed. R370 grant beneficiaries may receive any other government financial assistance, including NSFAS bursaries, UIF benefits, or other Sassa grants.
Grant applications will also be rejected if the applicant exceeds the income threshold. In terms of the R370 grant, income refers to the amount of money an applicant has in their bank account. The current income threshold is R624.
How to Check Your R370 Grant Application Status
If you applied for the R370 grant, you can check your application status online through the Sassa SRD website. This status check will let you know whether your application was approved, rejected, or is still pending.
If your application was rejected and you believe you meet the eligibility criteria, you have the right to appeal Sassa's decision. Appeals are handled by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).
How to Appeal a Rejected R370 Grant Application
- Visit the ITSAA website.
- Enter your South African ID number.
- Enter the cell phone number used during the application process.
- Click "Send Pin" and wait for an SMS with a verification code.
- Once you receive the pin, enter it and click "Submit."
- Select the month for which you are appealing (e.g., September 2024).
- Choose the reason for your appeal from the provided options.
- Click "Submit" to complete the appeal process.
You must submit a separate Sassa appeal for each month your SRD grant application was rejected. ITSAA aims to finalise appeals within 60-90 days.
What to Do if Your R370 Grant Appeal is Still Rejected
If ITSAA rejects your appeal, their decision is final. However, if you are dissatisfied with the decision, you can request a judicial review within 180 days of receiving the ITSAA decision.
