The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) distributes 18 million permanent grants aimed at assisting financially vulnerable people living in South Africa.
Grants distributed by Sassa include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
In February 2024, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the 2024 Sassa grant increases for all permanent grants. The announcement was made during his 2024 Budget Speech. The Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu has confirmed the grant increases.
The Minister Of Social Development, in terms of the Social Assistance Act 2024 (Act No. 13 of 2004) as amended, with the concurrence of the Minister of Finance, announced the increase in social grants.
The value of May 2024 grant payments will remain the same as the grant values in April 2024. All of Sassa’s grants received an increase in value in April 2024. Another increase will be implemented in some Sassa grants in October 2024. Here’s How Much Sassa Grants Will Be For May 2024

Sassa Grant Pay Dates For May
Sassa has confirmed that social grant payments are made from the second working day of each month In May 2024, grants will be paid from Friday, 3 May 2024.
While Sassa endeavours to pay social grants on consecutive days, it is not always possible due to the agency's grant payment policies. The current payment policy means that social grants are not made on public holidays or weekends. This will impact grant payment in May 2024 and beneficiaries of the disability grants and children's grants will have to wait a little bit longer before they receive their money.
