A Cabinet reshuffle has seen the DA's Dr Mimmy Gondwe replaced as the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has reshuffled his cabinet, moving a number of Democratic Alliance members. The reshuffle was prompted by the new DA leader, Geordin Hill-Lewis, who wrote to the President requesting a number of changes.
The most high profile change is that of John Steenhuisen, who is moved from Minister of Agriculture to the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.
In the Higher Education and Training Department Dr Mimmy Gonwe has been recalled by her party, and is to be replaced by another DA member.
The new Deputy Minister for Higher Education and training will be Yusuf Cassim, who has experience in the sector as he is currently a member of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education. Cassim has a history in student politics and is 36 this year.
Former Deputy Minister Mimmy Gondwe has been active in recent weeks. She has held public meetings with a number of private colleges and higher education institutions about how they can work more closely with the government.
Last week she went public with calls for NSFAS to be disbanded and it's functions distributed to the individual colleges and universities.
In a statement today confirming her recall, Gondwe highlighted some of the work she had been busy with. This included the Deputy Minister's HelpDesk with has handled over 67,000 enquiries with a 91% resolution rate.
The former Deputy Minister also highlighted her work with the 'Bogus Colleges Awareness Campaign' and the 'Matric Support Campaign'.
Dr Gondwe said, "I wish my successor well and every success in building on the foundation i have laid. I will continue to keep all students in my heart and in my prayers".
