The Gauteng Education Department has provided reassurance to parents that the upcoming online admission process for grade one and eight learners for the 2024 academic year will be seamless.

Matome Chiloane, the MEC for Education, announced on Sunday that the application period for these grades will open on 15 June and remain open until 14 July 2023.

This announcement comes after several parents expressed their concerns earlier in 2023 when the system failed to allocate placements for some learners in a timely manner for the current academic period.

In response, the Gauteng Education Department has taken proactive steps to address this issue, including the construction of additional schools to ensure that all learners can be accommodated without space constraints.

Speaking on the matter during his announcement MEC Chiloane emphasized the department's commitment to managing the growing demand for education in the province.

"Our system has been growing over the past 10 years or so. So, the infrastructure need is also becoming exponential, so we have to come up with measures," he stated.

He further assured parents that efforts are being made to ensure sufficient capacity by working diligently to get the spaces right and increase overall capacity. With the online application process set to open in mid-June, parents are urged to familiarize themselves with the requirements and procedures for successful enrollment.

The Gauteng Education Department will provide clear guidelines and support throughout the application period to facilitate a smooth and efficient process. He went on to point out that the system is currently able to process roughly 40,000 applications a minute.

The Application Process

To submit their online applications, parents and guardians must log into the department’s admissions website, which will be active on the abovementioned opening date and create their login credentials, namely their username and password through which they will access the online admissions system.

Once this has been done they will then be able to start their registration process following the predetermined step-by-step guidelines.

Parents have also been urged to ensure that they provide one reliable cellphone, as each step of the process is confirmed via SMS for security and verification purposes. The following steps must be completed during the application process for Grades 1 and 8 admissions.

Step 1 Register Parent/Guardian details
Step 2 Register home address details
Step 3 Register learner details
Step 4 Apply to a maximum of five schools
Step 5 Upload documents to the system or submit documents at schools within 7 school days.

Parents are encouraged to gather all the necessary documents and information required for the application process. This may include proof of residence, birth certificates, and any relevant medical records or special needs documentation for learners who require additional support.

For further updates and detailed instructions regarding the application process, parents are encouraged to regularly visit the official website of the Gauteng Education Department or contact the relevant authorities for any specific inquiries or assistance.
