The Department of Education in the Eastern Cape officially opened its school admissions period for 2024 on 12 April 2023. The department confirmed that application forms were issued on 17 April 2023.
In terms of admission eligibility, children aged 4 and turning 5 on 30 June can apply to be enrolled for Grade R, While children aged 5 turning 6 on 30 June are eligible for admission into Grade 1.
The method parents and guardians use to submit school applications, what documentation is required and when they will receive the outcome of their child's application are also determined by the provincial education department.
According to the department’s recent circular, all learners must be admitted by 31 October 2023. Following this deadline, applying parents and guardians will only be prioritised under exceptional circumstances such relocation and work transfers.

The department has also stated that each of its districts will establish a District Learner Admissions to manage queries related to learner admissions in each district. They will be chaired by a District Director and will also include a School Governing Body Coordinator and Circuit Managers.
These committees will also be tasked with compiling a district report on how these queries have been resolved. They will also have to maintain a database of queries and escalated admission cases for each year of application.
