The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has warned members of the public against applying for the “new R700 Sassa grant”.

Each month, Sassa distributes over 18 million permanent grant payments, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid. In addition to this, Sassa also offers the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants to unemployed citizens.

Sassa has warned that there is no R700 grant or R700 grant payment.

This comes after several social media posts claim that the agency is offering a R700 grant to South African citizens.

Sassa clients and the public at large are advised to ignore the information below as it is FALSE and does NOT come from SASSA.

The agency has also called on beneficiaries to exercise caution during the festive season and rely on official Sassa channels for updates on new initiatives.

This period often sees an increase in scams targeting vulnerable individuals. We urge our beneficiaries to remain vigilant and avoid being misled by unverified information.

Reporting grant fraud

Members of the public can report instances of grant fraud if they suspect it.

It's your responsibility to report any suspected fraudulent or corrupt activities relating to social grants. You can do so by phoning SASSA's grants and fraud hotline on 0800 601 011.

Visit the Reporting Fraud and Corruption page for more information on how to report corruption and maladministration by government officials.
