Friday, 28 April 2023 has been declared a special school holiday, and learners and teachers are not expected to attend school that day. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) sent out a message to parents and guardians reminding them that they do not need to send their children to school.

Thursday, 27 April 2023 is Freedom Day, a notable public holiday in the country that commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on that day, 29 years ago in 1994.

The Department and relevant stakeholders have come to an agreement to allow students and teachers a special school holiday on Friday, 28 April 2023, the day after Freedom Day.

The DBE further reminds South Africans that Monday, 1 May 2023, is also a public holiday so learners and teachers are also not expected at school on this day. This day commemorates Workers' Day, to celebrate the role Trade Unions and other parties played in achieving equal employment standards for everyone.

We therefore, as the Department of Basic Education, encourage the teaching and engagement of learners from as early an age as possible, to be taught about the history of our beautiful country.

These are important holidays in South African history that we should not forget the significance of, while looking toward a better and brighter future.

This means that there will be a long weekend for schools from Thursday, 27 April 2023 until Monday, 1 May 2023.
