The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) says 99% of learners whose parents submitted completed GDE Online Admission Applications have been placed.
A total of 344,725 online admission applications were submitted to the GDE. These online admission applications were for learners starting Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2025.
The GDE revealed that 325,858 qualified as complete applications. These applications contained all the relevant information and supporting documents needed for learner admission.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane says the 2025 Online Admission Application period has been the most successful since the province introduced the online application system.

Grade 1 Admissions
Chiloane confirmed that all completed Grade 1 admission applications resulted in learners being placed in the province.
In terms of Grade 1, we have placed all the completed applications.
The GDE received 165,785 Grade 1 admission applications, of which 157,406 were completed. This left 8,379 incomplete applications.
Grade 8 Admissions
Chiloane acknowledged that not all complete Grade 8 admission applications were resolved. Of the 168,452 completed applications, 124 learners remain unplaced.
The MEC said a meeting will be held with parents to complete the placement of these learners.
Incomplete Gauteng Admission Applications
Chiloane revealed that incomplete applications have yet to be dealt with by the GDE. There are currently 19,032 incomplete applications.
When you have an incomplete application, we didn't even touch you. We can't place a person that we don’t know. [the] 8,379 incomplete applications are not here. We are talking about the 157,406 complete applications.
Parents who submitted incomplete applications will have the opportunity to accept a placement offer at a school with available space. This will be available from 11 December 2024.
The 19,032 Incomplete Applicants will be able to select a school with available space for placement from 11 December 2024.
