The law field is a large and diverse one, and a degree in law does not limit a graduate to one specific type of law practice. There are a number of law types that a prospective lawyer can practice.

A career in law is one that offers a great variety for students to gain the opportunity to attain a position that caters specifically to their interests.

Law can be divided between private and public. Private law refers to the law that governs relationships between individuals, whilst public law entails the governing of relationships between individuals and the state.

Despite there being countless options available within the practice of law, which are said to reach up to at least 21 different types, this article will take a look into just 11 major fields of law, beginning with:

  • Business Law - aka commercial law or corporate law. This field of law instills its focus on law as it relates to businesses. It often features an overwhelming workload, but tends to pay higher.
  • Constitutional Law -  this field entails consideration of the fundamental laws of the constitution and ensuring that further legislation being passed does not break or override constitutional limits.
  • Criminal Law - this field of law is ascribed to issues of crime which may entail issues that may be criminally harmful.
  • Environmental Law - this field of law places focus on the protection of the environment and involves creating legislation for the protection of the environment.
  • Family Law - this field of law places focus on the relationships between individuals and families, including child welfare, divorce, etc.
  • Health Law - this field of law often includes the provision of legal services hospitals, health insurance companies, nursing homes, medical equipment manufacturers, and so on.
  • Immigration Law - this field of law refers to the legal precedent that governs immigration and deportation processes within a country.
  • Intellectual Property Law - this field of law focuses on legal rights as they relate to creations and inventions. This would include patent, trademark, and copyright laws.
  • Employment Law - this field of law refers to the relationship between employer and employee, and the lawyer would be put in a position to represent one or the other within a work dispute.
  • Personal Injury Law - this field of law sees the lawyer as representing a plaintiff with a complaint of injury of the mind, or the body due to negligent or intentional acts by another person/entity.
  • Tax Law - this field of law refers to the assessment and payment of taxes. 

Apart from the above-mentioned list, there are a number of other law careers, including those that do not necessarily require one to simply just be a lawyer. These include becoming an advocate, a judge, a lecturer, a policy advisor, and more.
