There are many reasons why a student might not be able to complete their matric, especially in South Africa. With the country’s history of inequality, it is no surprise that some learners do not have the funds to financially sustain their education all the way through.

Furthermore, since the education system grades each unique student according to the same criteria, it is not uncommon that some students may not manage the grades required to complete their matric based on this set of requirements.

Thankfully though, not all hope is lost for those students who do not manage to complete their matric. There are a number of further education opportunities available for learners without their high school qualification.

It is known that to enrol at most universities in South Africa, a student will need to have successfully completed their matric.

Unisa Courses Without Matric

This, however, does not necessarily apply at Unisa, whose vast selection of courses even feature a few courses that do not require having attained your matric. This is one reason why applying to Unisa is popular.

The courses that students can enrol for at Unisa without matric include the following:

  • Short course on Barista Skills - grade 10 minimum requirement (for deaf students)
  • Workshop in Nutrition and Food Safety - no admission requirement
  • Short Course in Basic Financial Life Skills - no admission requirement

These are very popular courses at Unisa.

Since the options are so limited at the university level, students are also welcome to try TVET Colleges, which also accept students who have achieved a minimum of a grade 9 pass and are at least 16 years of age.

TVET College Courses

The courses that can be studied at a TVET college include:

  • Receptionist and Telephone Skills
  • Welding
  • Upholstery
  • Labour Relations
  • Computer Courses
  • Bricklaying and Plastering
  • Pottery
  • Tourist guiding
  • Childcare
  • Tractor Maintenance
  • Hairdressing
  • Beauty Therapy
  • Bookkeeping
  • Events Management
  • Human Resources

These are just some of the many courses that can be studied without a matric certificate. Therefore, students without matric certificates can be assured that there are always other options.
