Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges play a critical role in producing artisans with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in a range of vocational and occupational careers. Graduates of TVET colleges are also well-placed to start their own businesses and pursue entrepreneurial opportunities.
There are fifty TVET colleges around South Africa. Many of these TVET colleges have multiple campuses which ensures they can provide vocational and occupational education and training to individuals in all corners of the country.
West Coast TVET College
West Coast College wants to be recognised as an institution responsive to the skills development and training needs of the 21st century.
Their mission is to services of relevance and have a responsive programme qualification mix by training students to be skilled, employable and entrepreneurial. They also want to give their students access to and achieve success in Higher Education.
West Coast TVET College Campuses
The Atlantis Campus was originally established in the 1980s as the Atlantis Technical Institute and in 1993 the campus became part of Protea College. The campus finally merged with West Coast College in 2002.
The Citrusdal Campus opened for the first time in January 1999 as the Citrusdal Centre for Further Education and Training. At first, it was part of the Tygerberg College and became part of West Coast FET College in 2002.
The Malmesbury Campus opened in January 2005 and moved to new premises in 2014, whilst the Vredenburg Campus, formerly known as the Westlake College, became part of West Coast College in August 1999. The new Vredenburg campus was officially opened in November 2012.
The Vredendal Campus was started in 1997 and in September 1998 the campus moved to bigger buildings, due to the rapid growth of students.
TVET College Courses
In South Africa's public TVET Colleges, you can pursue either NATED or NC(V) qualifications:
NATED (National Qualification Courses or Report 1919 NATED courses): These are post-school courses designed to provide specialised education in specific fields.
- To enrol in NATED N4-N6 courses, you typically need to have already obtained a Matric certificate.
- These qualifications extend up to NQF Level 6, encompassing practical and theoretical teaching methods.
NC(V) (National Certificate Vocational): NC(V) courses are tailored for students who want to acquire practical skills outside the traditional school environment.
- They are especially suitable for those who have decided on a career path and do not require a traditional high school experience.
- Completing an NC(V) qualification results in obtaining a Matric certificate.
- NC(V) qualifications allow students to become self-employed after obtaining their certificates and typically extend up to NQF Level 4, equivalent to Matric.

West Coast TVET College offers various NC(V) courses, Report 191 courses, occupational programmes and foundational programmes. Their occupational programmes include skills programmes, apprenticeships and learnerships.

Bursaries For West Coast College Courses
Students enrolled in approved courses at West Coast College can apply for bursaries from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
NSFAS provides funding to South African students from poor and working-class backgrounds. Bursaries provided by NSFAS aim to cover all the costs associated with tertiary education.
The NSFAS bursary includes covering a student's tuition and registration fees. In addition to paying these fees, NSFAS will also provide students with allowances.
