More young people have been grappling with teaching opportunities abroad, this includes teaching professionals.

This is one of many challenges faced by the Education Sector of teaching professions exiting the profession, hence there has been a number of bursaries that the government has introduced to meet the increasing demand for teachers in the selected subjects.

One of them includes the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme which is a multi-year programme to promote teaching as a profession. According to bursary, existing bursaries holders need to reapply every year to continue to receive funding.

The Funza bursary is awarded for one academic year at a time upon proof of academic progress.

For students to prove their academic progress, they have to make sure that they have passed all of the modules that they had studied in the year prior to the bursary application at the Higher Education Institution.

This will be an average of 55% across all of these modules studied.

It is also said that modules that have been taken as Majors will need to have at least an average of 66.6% in the student’s last year of study at the university which relate directly to the priority subject area of teaching specialisation.

The subject priority areas that have been identified by the Education Department are as follows:

  1. Foundation Phase (i.e. Grades R-3): Foundation Phase (with preference for South African Indigenous Languages) Neurodevelopment Needs, Braille, SASL.
  2. Intermediate and Senior Phase (i.e. Grades 4-9): Preference will be given for a teaching major in TWO of the following: Languages, Mathematics, and Natural Science & Technology
  3. FET phase (i.e. Grades 10-12): Preference will be given for a teaching major in TWO of the following: Accounting; Agricultural Sciences; Agricultural Technology; Civil Technology; Computer Applications Technology; Electrical Technology; Engineering Graphics and Design; Geography; Information Technology; Life Sciences; Mathematics; Mechanical Technology; Physical Sciences, Languages,Maritime studies, Coding and Robitics, Technical Mathematics and Technical Science.

The teaching qualifications that are funded through the Funza Lushaka bursary are the Bachelor of Education (BEd), and the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Senior Phase and FET teaching.

The BEd qualification runs for a period of four years full-time study and the PGCE qualification runs for a year of full-time study.

Depending on the number of years that the student has been funded by the Funza Lushaka bursary, one of the requirements of the bursary includes recipients teaching at a public school for the same number of years that they received the bursary.

After completing that period of teaching, they can then apply wherever they want to teach.
