The trade test is a test of the student’s knowledge, competence and skills in the artisan field.

In order to qualify to write the trade test, students need to have successfully completed all practical training unit standards or modules for welding courses. Training should have taken place at an accredited training provider as verifiable by training records.

Students are also required to meet the requirements of the structured workplace and complete their learning over a minimum 12-month period. Certain trade test centres require students to present a logbook which includes a record of the work done during their course.

Learners are awarded three attempts to take their trade test. If they do not pass the test the third time, then they will be referred for recognition of prior learning.

Recognition of prior learning addresses the gaps in the student's knowledge. Once they have completed the course, they are allowed to rewrite the trade test.

Once students have successfully completed the trade test, they will receive a Trade Test Certificate. This certificate is essential when seeking employment, as it will allow the artisan to work at a certain level.
