Sassa has made it clear that Sassa grant payments commence on the second working day of the month, with many grant beneficiaries questioning this. Now, the social security agency has revealed why this happens.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is responsible for disbursing social grants to over 18 million beneficiaries every month. These grants include the the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grantWar Veterans grantCare Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.

Sassa is also responsible for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, which is paid separately to the permanent social grants and has it's own Sassa grant payment schedule.

The agency announced that Sassa grant payments will be made from the second working day of the month, excluding public holidays and weekends. However, beneficiaries are unhappy with this arrangement and have called for grants to be paid from the first of every month.

One Sassa beneficiary said, "Pay us on the 1st of each month. Your salary dates are set dates so make our dates," with others saying asking, "how can people live like this with late payment".

Sassa went on to explain:

This is our contribution to maintaining social distance & protecting the vulnerable from congestion at payment facilities. We humbly request beneficiaries to make adjustments with their creditors & budgets generally

The agency then says that it was a difficult decision to make but that due to circumstances, they were forced to make the change.
