Did you know that if you have been raising a foster child, Sassa can provide you with a social grant for the child you have been taking care of? Here is how the Foster Child grant works and how you can apply for it.

The Sassa Foster Child is meant for people who hold legal custody or officially bear the parental responsibility of raising children who has either been orphaned, abandoned, are at risk, abused or Neglected.

The SASSA Foster Care grant pays out R1 050 per month and is paid out using a variety of payment methods which include the ones listed below:

  • Cash at a specific pay point on a particular day
  • Electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account. This may include additional bank service charges.
  • An institution acting as the administrator of the grant such as a welfare organisation.

In event of not being able to collect the grant payment on your own, you can choose to appoint a procurator at the Sassa office or give someone power of attorney to collect the grant on your behalf.

It may take up to three months for Sassa to process your application. If your application is approved, you will be paid from the date the court placed the child in your care.
