Many people apply for the Social Relief of Distress grant without knowing that they might be declined for one reason or the other.

Sassa declines applicants after having gone through their database, verifying the information that they have provided them with.

The main requirement that Sassa looks at, is that the fact that you ought not to be receiving money from alternative sources - this is inclusive of other government grants and UIF funds.

However, the only grant holder who’s an exception, in this case, is one who receives the Caregivers' grant of R595 per month.

If you want to contest this, go through the appeals process so that Sassa reconsiders your application for the SRD grant.

If you have received the Existing SASSA grant' SRD status, lodge an appeal on the official SRD website within 30 days of receiving your status.

Here’s how you can lodge your appeal:

  1. Go to the SRD Grant website
  2. Scroll down to 'Application for reconsideration'
  3. Click on the yellow bar
  4. Fill in the required fields
  5. Once you've submitted your SRD appeal, you will then need to track it.

Click here to find out how to track the status of your SRD appeal.

Sassa will communicate the outcome of your appeal via an SMS.
