The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) approves Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applications once the applicant's details have been verified with the Department of Home Affairs.
Sassa's online system processes applicants' information through a number of different databases when considering their application.
The first step is that the applicant's name, surname and ID number is run though the Department of Home Affairs.
Sassa does this to make sure the details provided match with the Department of Home Affairs database.
Applications where applicants have chosen to receive their R350 grant payment through their bank account will go through a bank verification process. This is done to ensure that the applicant does not have an alternative monthly income which exceeds R624.
During the bank verification process, the applicant's details are sent to the Department of Treasury, then to the bank chosen by the applicant.
The application will also be checked to ensure that the applicant is not using another person's banking account. Sassa has emphasized that applicants must provide their own bank account details.
Once the details are verified, it is sent back to Treasury and will then be handed over to Sassa so that payment can occur.
Applicants are advised that the process of bank verification does not have a set timeframe.
If your application is not approved then it may mean that it has not passed one of the verification processes.
Should you wish to have your application reconsidered because you believe that you've been declined unfairly, Sassa does allow you to appeal. This appeal will mean that Sassa has to go in and reconsider your SRD grant application.
The appeal has to be lodged on the website within 30 days of when your rejection status became available to you.

- Click on the yellow bar
- Fill in the required fields
An appeal must be lodged for every month that the grant is declined.
