The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) pays permanent grants to more than 18 million people every month. There are several ways these grant beneficiaries can choose to collect their money.

One of the payment options available to grant beneficiaries is to collect their money at a retail store. Sassa grants are paid at several retail stores, including Africa’s largest supermarket retailer Shoprite Holdings which operates more than 3,000 stores.

Sassa grant beneficiaries can choose to collect their money at Shoprite, Checkers or Usave stores around South Africa. To do this, they must switch their Sassa grant payment method to a Shoprite Money Account.

How To Switch To A Shoprite Money Account

Step 1: Register For A Shoprite Money Account

Registration for a Shoprite money account can be done using four different methods. Grant beneficiaries can register by:

Step 2: Sign in and download your Bank Confirmation Letter.

Step 3: Download a Sassa consent form here or collect one at the Money Market counter in any Shoprite or Checkers supermarket.

Step 4: Take your printed Bank Confirmation Letter, completed Sassa switch form and original ID to your nearest Sassa office.

Grant beneficiaries are reminded that it is free of charge when they switch their grant payment method to a Shoprite Money Account.

Benefits Of A Shoprite Money Account

The Shoprite Money Account is the lowest-cost transactional bank account in South Africa. The account has no monthly fees. However, grant beneficiaries will be charged R5 for every withdrawal they make from the account.

Grant beneficiaries are not charged any fees when they send money, buy airtime, data, and electricity, send grocery vouchers, pay bills or pay for groceries from their phones.

Grant recipients will get up to R100 in Shoprite vouchers when their first SASSA grant of R800 or more, is paid into their Money Market Account.

There are also more than 25,000 till points at Shoprite, Checkers and Usave supermarkets around South Africa. This allows beneficiaries to skip the long queues at Post Office branches on the grant payment dates.
