If you are told that you have been rejected for NSFAS funding you are able to appeal the decision. In previous years you had to fill out a paper form but from 2020 this is no longer necessary. You can appeal the decision online via your MYNSFAS student portal account.
Follow these steps to appeal your NSFAS rejection:
- Log into your MyNSFAS account by CLICKING HERE.
- Click the Track Funding Progress option.
- Check the application progress tabs.
- If your application status reflects that it is unsuccessful, then you may submit an appeal by clicking on the Submit Appeal tab.
- Once you are on the Application Appeal page, you'll be able to see the reason for your unsuccessful application status.
- Write a motivational letter stating the reasons why you are appealing your application status.
- Your motivational letter must not exceed 1000 characters (words including spaces).
- Upload certified supporting documents to support your motivation. A maximum of 5 documents.
- Click Submit Appeal.
- You will be able to track the progress of your appeal via your MyNSFAS account.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government initiative that provides financial assistance to academically deserving students who come from poor and lower-income families to help them pay for their tertiary education. The aim of NSFAS is to increase access to higher education and to ensure that no deserving student is denied the opportunity to study due to financial constraints. The scheme covers tuition fees, accommodation, and allowances for books, food and transportation.
NSFAS is managed by the Department of Higher Education and Training and is open to all South African citizens and permanent residents who meet the criteria. Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited public university or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college. They must also meet the financial eligibility criteria, which is based on the combined annual income of their family or guardians.
