It has been reported that the university had 60 students enrolled for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) undergraduate degree in 2016.

According to the School of Medicine Acting Director, Professor Samuel Risenga, the numbers have increased exponentially for the programme.

The University of Limpopo celebrates the 46 medical doctors that will be graduating at the Autumn Graduation 2022.

It has been confirmed that this cohort of students completed their studies in December 2021.

Dr. Decent Mukhombo is the youngest in this cohort of students, having enrolled in the medical programme at the age of 15.

In an interview, Mukhombo shared:

There were some hurdles along the way but we made it through.

Risenga has shared that they are happy to have produced a good group of doctors.

As this is the first medical school to be constructed post-1994, this graduation ceremony is not only a milestone in the lives of the graduands but it is a historical moment.

While most of these new Doctors are based in the Limpopo province and are also widespread in other parts of the country.

Last year, Nelson Mandela University opened its doors to its medical school, making it the second medical school to be opened post-1994.
