The Department of Basic Education (DBE) will announce the outcome of the 2022 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations later this week. While many learners will be satisfied with the results they achieved, some will choose to rewrite their exams.
Research conducted by Youth Capital Campaign suggests that around 250,000 learners attempt to rewrite their NSC examinations without assistance.
Network mobiliser at Youth Capital Lethiwe Sinodumo Nkosi says young people who register to rewrite their examinations require support to be successful.
Nkosi explains that young people are eager to obtain their NSC qualifications. This as an NSC allows young people to apply for some entry level jobs. They explain that once a young person finds employment, they are more likely to stay employed.
However, this eagerness can be reduced when learners who do not know how to register to rewrite their exams don't have access to resources needed to prepare for their NSC rewrite.
Nkosi encourages members of the public to assist learners in any way they can as they prepare for their examination rewrites.
“You can support a young person by ensuring that when they do know about the Second Chance Matric Program, help them register. But also as they prepare to rewrite help them with finding textbooks and past papers that they can use to be better prepared for the exam”
A component of this assistance is ensuring that learners know about the Second Chance Matric Programme (SCMP).
The SCMP allows individuals to rewrite their matric examinations while being provided with support from the Department of Basic Education (DBE).
This support comes in the form of face-to-face classes, Learning And Teaching Support Materials (LTSMs) and access to several multimedia resources including online videos, television and radio broadcasts. The resources learners can access are available to learners at no cost.
Individuals can choose to register for subjects they want to improve and rewrite their examinations either in May/June 2023 NSC and Senior Certificate examinations or during the October/November 2023 examinations season.
Learners who want to rewrite their matric exams can register at any district education office or online at www.eservices.gov.za.
