A large group of school learners from around Gauteng, led by student movement, Cosas marched to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in Sandton on Friday to demand that listed companies allocate R1 billion to helping learners.
The march organisers went on to hand over a memorandum demanding more than R10 billion, which will be used to pay registration fees for first-year students in 2022 as well as their application fees for 2023.
The protesting group also demanded listed companies to donate R1 billion towards basic education. According to Eyewitness News reporter, Lennox Wasara, the group held a similar march in 2016 and did not get a response.
According to the student organisation, all companies listed on the JSE must actively participate in the country's transformation and ensure that their generated wealth is shared with the country’s Citizens.
They also called for learners from grades 10-12 to be incorporated into companies listed on the stock exchange as a practical way of upskilling the youth.
