The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has added a school of specialisation in Tembisa, in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.
The Municipality accounts for the highest number of schools of specialisation in Gauteng, with majority of them being Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) schools.
This is the Municipality’s first Entrepreneurship school, which primarily has its focus on the tourism and hospitality industry, including entrepreneurship.
GDE Minister Panyaza Lesufi has also shown appreciation to the Peermont Casino for the partnership that has helped in the launch of the Tembisa Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation.
In an interview, Gauteng Education Minister Panyaza Lesufi said:
The reason why we are focusing on these schools is to link them up with industries that are growing and growing faster.
Lesufi added that it is important to add more skills-based schools to lessen the unemployment rate. According to Statistics South Africa, South African youth continues to be disadvantaged in the labour market with an unemployment rate higher than the national average.
The National Governors Association (Naga) also said that the opening of these schools of specialisation in Gauteng by the Education Minister is part of changing the face of township schools.
One of the school learners confidently shared that he has a passion for cooking and aspires to be a chef one day, with his own restaurant.
GDE spokesperson, Steve Mabona has shared that the provincial education department will be launching two of these schools this year.
