Minister Lindiwe Zulu announced that SASSA has paid over 3 million beneficiaries for the R350 grant.
As of 13 July, SASSA paid a total of 3,429,808 grantholders for the special relief grant offered to unemployed individuals who receive no other incomes or grants. This would translate to Government having paid over R1,2 billion towards this relief fund so far.
SASSA saw 7,5 million applications were received for the grant and of that total, over 4 million were accepted to benefit from the R350 grant.
This grant will see beneficiaries receive payment until October. After that, Government is looking to introduce a basic income grant.
Zulu, Minister of Social Development, said, "SASSA will on a monthly basis reassess all applications to ensure that where circumstances have changed, an income is received from any other source, the grant will not continue".
Much of the general public wanting to benefit from the grant have been lodging complaints against the agency concerning delays with both application processing and payment. For this, Zulu apologised saying that it was due to a large amount of applications and glitches with the systems.
She also stated, "Sassa is implementing a resource mechanism for applicants who have been declined and wish to review the decisions, applicants can review the decisions". This comes after it was found that SASSA declined many applicants on an unfair basis.
