The South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) manages grants and allowances for groups in South African society needing assistance. This includes grants for children, the older persons grants, disability grants and R350 grant for the special relief of distress during the Covid-19 crisis.
To qualify for a SASSA grant, applicants must meet certain eligibility criteria, such as age, income, and residency requirements. Applicants must also complete an application form and provide supporting documentation to prove their eligibility.
The agency aims to provide social security services to vulnerable groups in society and promote social welfare and development.
Sassa has increased social grants in October 2022. Beneficiaries of the R350 SRD grant would also be pleased to know that the R350 grant has been extended for another year.
Grants only increased by a small percentage to administer social assistance to South African citizens.
The following social grants will increase as follows:
- Older Age (60-74 years old) will increase from R1980 to R1990
- Older Age (75+ years) will increase from R2000 to R2010
- War Veteran's will increase from R1980 to R1990
- Disability will increase from R1980 to R1990
- Care Dependency will increase from R1980 to R1990
All of these Sassa grants have increased by R10.
There have been no increases for the Foster Care grant, Child Support grant and the Grant-In-Aid as these grants previously increased by R20 in April 2022.
However, Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu has announced that the Child Support Grant (CSG) Top-up would be introduced to improve the lives of orphaned children in the country.
Caregivers of orphaned children are eligible to apply for the CSG Top-up which means they will receive R480 plus an additional R240 bringing the total amount received to R720 per child each month.
