More people will now be able to benefit from The Unemployment Insurance Fund’s (UIF) and are not even required to have been registered with the UIF before claiming.
UIF has set up the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) to grant relief to those who have salaries affected by Covid-19. However, this initially excluded many such as domestic workers and informal workers.
The requirements for who qualifies for this scheme have been changed. Employers can register employees for TERS who were not registered with UIF should the employee have been employed for more than 24 hours per month.
With this new amendment, many of those who were excluded before can now benefit. However, those who are self-employed and freelancers will still not qualify. Which has also been an issue that those who fall under these categories have voiced, feeling neglected by Government.
With TERS, the minimum payment an employee will receive is R3500 per month and a maximum of R6730 per month.
UIF has since paid out billions to millions of South Africans who have been affected by the pandemic and National Lockdown.
