Classes have been suspended for a week at Witbank Technical High School in Mpumalanga following a racially charged protest that turned violent on Monday.

An intense protest between black and white parents broke into a chaotic physical altercation at the school's gates on Monday morning. The incident is said to have been caused by a fight at the school last week between black and white pupils.

The scene has since been marked by a heavy police presence at the school's premises to prevent any further violence between the protesting parents.

A disgruntled woman at the scene, claiming to be the mother of one of the suspended black pupils, went on to give her side of the story saying all the children involved should have been

"Apparently they were fighting, there were three whites and two blacks. The other two overpowered the three although they did not start the fight. Their teacher started the altercation because she doesn't have a well-mannered way of addressing the children. She calls our children names, but I can't say much because we are still going to a disciplinary hearing," she said

I don't promote violent behaviour between, but if five children fought then five children must be suspended.

Community leaders accompanying the black parents claim that racial discrimination has been an ongoing issue that is yet to be addressed at the school. The white parents decline to comment on the matter.
