Last week, the 2022 matric results were released and matriculants are now left with deciding and figuring out which career path to take.
The most common piece of advice given to matriculants entering the labour market is to follow careers or study fields that are aligned with their skillset or passions.
However, studies suggest that even if one knows what one's skills are, it is not always easy to work out what jobs will be best suited for you.
Dr Shahiem Patel, Head of the School for Commerce and Management at Regent Business School says that in order to make an effective career or study choice, one has to have a profound and mindful understanding of oneself.
This will enable them to make a sound decisions that not only are based on skills they have but are also based on what works for them as individuals.
Patel says that some of the most common careers that school leavers are currently leaning towards are careers in social media and creative arts.
We are seeing a very strong tendency and trend towards the arts and the monetization of art.
Patel says that social media and technology has enabled young people to formulate and create careers that never existed in the past, and has become a viable option for young students to follow.
“We [Regent Business School] have done really well in focusing and showcasing what 21st century digital and literacy skills is and how that can be useful going forward,” continues Patel.
He says that one’s ability to adapt to different environments and economies is a central life skill that will be useful in various stages of one's life.
“Your ability to fluidly transition from on direction to another will really set you up for success, technology is an enabler of change and it is going to increase in a rate that we have never seen before,”
Patel says that the best way young people can equip themselves for the all the changes that are happening in working environment is to be able to adapt to these change.
