Through the Schools Democracy Programme 2022 campaign, learners will be given knowledge that will equip them to be active citizens when it is time for them to vote in the future.

The campaign will be launched on the same week as Human Rights Day at the Rekgaratlile High School in Kuruman, Northern Cape, running from 25 - 29 April 2022.

On behalf of the education department and the Commission, DBE Deputy Minister, Dr. Reginah Mhaule and the Provincial Electoral Officer Bonolo Modise will be speaking at the launch.

In a statement, the following was confirmed:

As part of the campaign, thousands of learners across the country will engage in civic education and electoral registration activities.

It has been reported that IEC staff will be present on the day to assist learners with relevant information and demonstrate the latest election management technology.

Prior to the November 2021 local government elections, the Commission had revealed that youth that registered for the first time during the registration week were 91%, the bulk in this category accounted for the youth aged 16-29.

The IEC is currently addressing this through its campaigns in both Basic Education and Tertiary institutions.
