A Randfontein school made headlines this year, following racial tensions that had led to learners fighting on the school premises.
Gauteng Education Minister Panyaza Lesufi paid a visit to the school, met with relevant parties, and thereafter, an investigation was launched.
The Education Department has confirmed that it has received a preliminary report at Hoërskool Jan Viljoen on 17 May 2022, that confirmed learners and third parties were involved in the initial fighting and violence at the school, and further gave recommendations.
It is said that the report was presented to the Education Minister, the school's management, the School Governing-Body, and parents by Luke Enslin.
Enslin is a representative of Specialised Security Services, which is a private investigative company hired by the school to investigate what took place in February 2022.
In a statement, the department’s spokesperson Steve Mabona said:
The recommendations made by Mr. Enslin and his team were that disciplinary processes against identified and newly identified learners proceed.
Enslin has also recommended that the school establish a grievance committee to manage conflict and prevent it from spiraling out of control. Additionally, the school implements diversity programmes and training for different learners to understand each other and not resort to violence.
Lesufi explained that the department’s law unit would consolidate this preliminary report with a previous sexual harassment report and an outstanding report from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
