A grade 10 learner was gunned down by a fellow learner after an altercation. The learner then turned the gun to shoot himself outside the school premises.

The reason behind the altercation between the two learners hasn’t yet been established.

It has been confirmed that the unidentified pair were Grade 10 pupils at Lesiba Secondary School, in Daveyton.

It has been reported that the two learners have both passed away and the police have started with investigations.

The education department believes that the learner hadn’t entered the school's premises with the weapon as they work hand-in-hand with SAPS, conducting random searches at schools.

Lesiba Secondary School is fully operational, however, Gauteng Education Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona said:

What we are doing is to provide necessary counseling, which we have already started with. Remember, there are those that would have been very close to both learners, and also some educators would have been very close to them after teaching them throughout the years. So, we normally provide professional assistance for both employees and learners.

Mabona further assures that in all of the department's schools learners know that it is not advisable for them to carry weapons.
