The paying out of South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) social grants enables many of the country’s financially vulnerable grant beneficiaries to afford basic necessities.

This is also why it is key for the government to ensure that the amounts keep up with the rising inflation rate to cushion against the burdening cost of living.

To this end, Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana announced during this year’s annual budget speech that all permanent social grants will increase with effect from 1 April 2023, with further increments scheduled to take effect during the mid-term budget period on 1 October 2023.

Amount of grant increases from 1 April 2023

  • Older Persons Grant (below 75 years): Increase from R1,990 to R2,080

Sassa Social Grant Payment Schedule For April 2023

  • Older Persons Grant - 3 April
  • Disability Grant - 4 April
  • Children's Grant (and all other grants) - 5 April

The Social Relief of Distress grant is exempt from these dates because there are no set deadlines for its payments. Grant payouts are made available after Sassa completes the application and payment processing.

Although Sassa grant payments begin on specified days, beneficiaries are not required to collect their Sassa grant payments on those particular days.
