The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has plans to enroll 2.5 million students in TVET colleges by 2030.

Deputy Minister of the DHET, Buti Manamela believes that this is an ambitious target, as he stated the following:

There will be challenges around infrastructure, but the ministry is looking to work with the Department of Public Works to accommodate student living and expand the TVET sector.

The expansion of the TVET sector will also include opening up the online learning space, as the department believes that the future of expanding the Post-School Education and Training system lies in blended learning.

There are initiatives that are currently in the work of ensuring that there is wide access to the internet .

The department envisions that transformation in the education sector does not only end with young women dominating the post-school education and training sector only in terms of participation, but also in terms of graduation.

“Chances of a TVET college graduate being employed are much higher than in any other sector in our education system,” said Manamela.

The department has committed to increasing the number of enrolment in TVET colleges as well as the quality of TVET education to ensure and encourage skills development that will not come from universities.

The public, parents and prospective students have also been cautioned against bogus colleges. The department has also encouraged individuals to lodge complaints or visit the department website to verify the specific programme that they wish to register for.
