The parents of Hoerskool Jan Viljoen learners honoured the Gauteng Education Ministers' invite to address the issue of alleged racial tension amongst learners at the school.

According to a media advisory that had been released, the Education Minister was meant to arrive at 17:30, however, as the parents waited, an announcement was made that the Minister will arrive at 18:00.

It has been reported that this caused the parents to be agitated and everyone was able to enter the venue.

When the Minister arrived at the sports field, some parents had left due to the pouring rain, however, the Minister made his way to the pavilion, to apologise.

According to Lesufi, he had been stuck in a storm on his way to the venue.

In a Newzroom Afrika live interview, Lesufi said:

We need to bring calm to the school, there's no way that education can continue in this environment.

Lesufi postponed the meeting to Sunday, 20 February 2022, and promised to give feedback on this particular meeting.

He also added that schooling will be able to continue as the situation isn’t as tense as it was.

At some point, the parents had been in a calmer state and engaged in how transformation is needed.

Before the Minister arrived, some parents said the infighting was due to racism, others made a counter-argument that this was an issue of discipline.

Furthermore, it has been reported that some of the issues that exist at the school included course allegations around sexual misconduct by one of the teachers at the school.
