With learners due to due resume school activities on 7 February 2022. The Department of Basic Education in KwaZulu-Natal has urged parents to ensure that children are vaccinated, and stated that they will soon unveil a vaccination plan for learners on Wednesday 9 February 2022.
KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC took to social media to point out that he is confident that the planned learner vaccination program will proceed without any hassles since 98% of teachers had been vaccinated by the time of the teacher's vaccination program was concluded.
During a media briefing on 11 January this year, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga initially stated that Covid-19 regulations would remain in place in schools throughout the country.
The decision received favourable responses from various civic organisations and education stakeholders.
However, the decision was overturned following the cabinet’s decision to allow learners to return to school on a full-time basis.
The Basic Education Department later confirm in a statement that the rotational timetable will be officially scrapped by 07 February 2022.
Motshekga also said that ideally, vaccinations should be offered at schools to children over the age of 12. However, she said this is not yet possible as the Department of Health does not have the necessary capacity.
The minister also added that she was also aware of parental concerns that their children would be vaccinated without their consent, but stated that this would not be the case and that the Department aims to work with parents and make efforts to get their permission.
