Being a tertiary student can expose you to various changes, some of which may include transferring from one university to the next. But how does that decision affect your funding status as a NSFAS funded student who is registered to two institutions? Let’s find out.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) plays a crucial role in ensuring that there’s a low barrier to entry for aspiring students who are unable to afford tuition fees.

But what happens in a scenario where you are a student who has opted to change institutions and register to another, while registered to your current one? Will the bursary scheme fund you in both institutions?

NSFAS says “You cannot be funded at two institutions. You need to deregister at one of them.”

When you change or transfer from a new institution to another, both your old and new institutions should work together to send your academic and NSFAS registration data to NSFAS so that your funding gets re-evaluated according to NSFAS.

However, receiving funding at your news institution is not guaranteed. This is because you still have to qualify for NSFAS to be funded, even when you change your institution.

You should bear in mind that NSFAS will re-evaluate your funding to check if you still meet the requirements for funding according to your new institution.
