The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) recently opened semester 2 bursary applications for students enrolled in approved courses at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. However, the short NSFAS application period gives students little time to secure funding from NSFAS for the second semester.

NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. This includes money for tuition and registration fees as well as  several allowances for food, accommodation and learning materials.

The bursary aims to support students from low-income and working-class families, alleviating the financial burden of tertiary education.

TVET Colleges have different academic calendars compared to universities and other higher education institutions. As a result, NSFAS offers separate application periods for TVET College students not enrolled in year-long courses. This is why the NSFAS application period is only for TVET college students, not university students.

NSFAS Semester 2 Application Period

Applications opened on 9 July 2024 and will close on 26 July 2024, providing students with a 17-day window to apply for this essential government bursary.

The application process for NSFAS remains consistent for all 2024 cycles. Students are required to apply through the NSFAS website via the myNSFAS portal.

Steps to Apply for NSFAS

Step 1: Visit www.nsfas.org.za and click on the 'myNSFAS' tab.

Step 2: Create a myNSFAS account.

Step 3: Select the 'APPLY' tab and complete the necessary sections.

Step 4: Upload the required supporting documents.

Step 5: Click 'Submit'.

Eligibility Requirements for TVET College Students

  • Must be a South African citizen.
  • Must be registered or planning to register for a PLP, NC(V), or Report 191 program.
  • Must comply with the N+Rule.
  • Must not enrol in a qualification that duplicates previously state-funded learning.
  • Must have a combined gross family income of up to R350,000 per annum for a bursary or up to R600,000 for an NSFAS loan.

Ensure you apply within the deadline to secure your NSFAS bursary and take a crucial step towards achieving your educational goals.
