The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides the NSFAS bursary to students who come from poor and working class backgrounds. This NSFAS funding goes beyond just paying for fees as it also provides students with NSFAS allowances to pay for their student needs.

During a briefing with National Assembly, the Department of Higher Education spoke about their state of readiness for the 2024 academic year as well as NSFAS' readiness. They then revealed when NSFAS allowance payments will be made for the first few months of the year.

When Students Will Receive NSFAS Allowance Payments

Upfront payments to cover tuition and accommodation allowances will be paid to universities at the end of January on the 31st.

These NSFAS allowance payments are made monthly with the Department saying, "monthly payments will be done at the end of each month".

However, for February and March, payments will be made differently. Instead of monthly, students will receive bi-weekly payments.

NSFAS 2024 Applications

On 21 November, NSFAS applications for funding for the 2024 academic year opened. The application window will remain open until 31 January 2024.

NSFAS provides comprehensive funding to more than one million students enrolled in approved programmes at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.

The bursaries offered by NSFAS are designed to cover all costs associated with tertiary education. This includes funding for tuition and registration fees, along with various allowances.
