With the aim of supporting higher education for deserving students, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has seen a surge in applications for the 2023 academic year, reaching an impressive increase of 1.6 million applications.

However, for the current academic year, 1.1 million tertiary students have been granted student funding by the scheme, reflecting its commitment to promoting accessible education.

A Student-Centred Approach to Funding

NSFAS has introduced a new approach to student funding through its student-centred funding model. This model ensures that eligible students in public universities and TVET colleges across the country receive their allowances directly

These allowances aim to provide financial assistance to students to help cover various expenses related to their education and well-being during the academic year.

How Students Can Access Their Allowance Payments

Tertiary students who are beneficiaries of NSFAS funding can access their monthly allowance payments through their dedicated Nsfas bank accounts.

These accounts have been designed to streamline the process of disbursing funds directly to students, enabling them to better manage their financial needs.

Exact Payment Dates

If you're among the fortunate group of students benefiting from NSFAS funding, you might be wondering about the specific date when the monthly allowance payments are made. NSFAS has taken to their official Twitter account to provide clarity on this matter.

According to their recent announcement, allowance payments are made after the 25th of every month. This consistent schedule aims to assist students in planning their finances effectively.

Addressing Delays and Concerns

NSFAS has taken proactive measures to address concerns raised by students regarding potential delays in receiving their allowances. They emphasised that payments are processed in accordance with registration templates received from educational institutions.

We have been processing payments via service providers, please note that we only pay based on the registration templates we have received from the institution. We will pay to NSFAS beneficiaries whose allowances are still due to them.

The timing of payments varies for each student based on their individual registration data. If registration data was received after the last payment run or was not verified before it, students are advised to await the next payment cycle.

Allowances provided by NSFAS serve as crucial support for students, covering various essential expenses. These include costs associated with learning materials or devices, travelling, food, accommodation, personal care, and general living expenses.
