The University of South Africa (Unisa), has confirmed its 2025 application period closing date.

The country's largest higher education institution recently opened applications for the 2025 academic year. Applications are open for undergraduate qualifications and advanced certificates, higher certificates, honours degrees, postgraduate diplomas and advanced diplomas.

As an Open Distance e-learning (ODeL) institution, Unisa offers flexible learning options, allowing students to study at their own pace from the comfort of their homes. The university's online examination system further enhances its accessibility.

Unisa 2025 Application Period

The Unisa 2025 application period officially opened on 21 August 2024. Students have less than 50 days to apply as Unisa 2025 applications close on 11 October 2024.

Applications are open for undergraduate qualifications and advanced certificates, higher certificates, honours degrees, postgraduate diplomas and advanced diplomas.

How Unisa Applications Work

Unisa’s selection process for 2025 involves calculating a prospective student’s individual score. This score is based on their final Grade 12 marks and other factors such as the school attended, gender, socioeconomic background, race, and more.

As part of its commitment to addressing past inequalities, Unisa has an application and selection process that aims to balance historical imbalances without compromising quality standards.

Before applying, students must ensure they meet both the statutory and college-specific admission requirements, including the required Academic Points Score (APS) for their chosen qualification. The minimum APS score varies depending on the college and the specific qualification. Applicants should consult the admission requirements for each qualification they are interested in.

Applicants can apply for up to two qualifications, listing them in order of preference. However, they can only register for one qualification, even if they are accepted for both. Unisa will notify the student of their application status, indicating the qualification they have been accepted for and the corresponding study period.

Upon receiving an offer from Unisa, the applicant must respond within the specified timeframe. If they fail to accept the offer within 10 working days, the offer will be withdrawn, and their place will be allocated to another applicant.

Applicants can only accept one offer. Once they receive an offer for a qualification (whether it’s their first or second choice), the other offer will be automatically withdrawn.

After accepting the offer, the student must register for the designated study period. If they do not register for that semester, they will need to reapply for admission in the next application cycle.

Who Needs to Apply?

Anyone intending to begin a new qualification must apply for admission. This includes first-time applicants to Unisa as well as current students seeking to change their qualifications or specialisation. If the applicant is completing a higher certificate and wishes to continue with further undergraduate studies, they must also apply for admission. Additionally, if an applicant previously applied for admission and received an offer, but did not accept or register, they will also need to reapply.

Individuals planning to enrol in classes at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college under the Unisa-TVET agreement must also apply for admission.
