With effect from Monday, June 7th, The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has announced that it will suspend all contact classes following the death of a student due to Covid-19.
This comes after the University reported an increase in the number of students, as well as staff members, who have tested positive for Covid-19.
According to an article published by The Citizen, the University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor of teaching, learning and technology, Prof Stanley Mukhola called for adherence to Covid -19 rules to stop the spread.
The rise in infections in communities, including our TUT community, calls for more vigilance and adherence to the required Covid-19 rules to help stop the spread.
“In view of these risks, students will resume online teaching and learning from Monday as per the approved multimodal teaching and learning strategy. Students will be provided with the necessary data to support them with online learning,” he added
Furthermore, the University's Spokesperson, Phaphama Tshisikhawe told the SABC that the university was saddened by the passing of the student last week, who was also the first that is known to have succumbed to Covid-19 related complications.
We are extremely sad. The staff [and] the students as well. I would like to take this opportunity also to say condolences to the family and convey that message. A young life lost is devastating to the community, the University, to her friends and family as well.
Tshisikhawe also spoke to radio 702 Mandy Weiner in an interview and confirmed they have resumed online classes where she said that this is actually the first Covid related incident that the university is aware of and has a full report on.
She continued to say, "We have suspended contact classes, this was not because of the death of the student. The majority of our provinces are currently on the third wave of Covid-19 infections and the infection rate is especially high and concerning in Gauteng and that's the reason why the contact classes were suspended".
