The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has opened Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applications for December 2024. Individuals needing financial assistance who meet the eligibility requirements can apply.
SRD grant beneficiaries receive R370 per month, after receiving a Sassa increase on 1 April 2024.
Who Qualifies for the SRD Grant?
To qualify for the SRD grant in South Africa, applicants must meet certain criteria. They need to be citizens, residents, or special permit holders, but they shouldn't receive other government support in the form of UIF benefits or NSFAS bursaries. Their bank account should have less than R624 to be eligible for the R370 grant.
Sassa verifies identity and income through the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Treasury before processing payments, which are scheduled at the end of the month.

Where To Collect SRD Grant Payments For January 2025
Approved applicants for January can either receive payments directly into their bank accounts or collect them at authorised supermarkets, including Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, USave, Shoprite, OK, and Spar.
SRD grant payments are made during the final week of the month after Sassa completed various verification checks. These verification checks seek to ensure only deserving individuals receive SRD grant payments.
Sassa has made it clear that funds will take about 2 to 3 working days to reflect in the grantholder’s bank account after the Sassa SRD payment has been processed.
