The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has opened applications for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant for June 2025. Eligible individuals in need of financial support can now submit their applications.

Who Qualifies for the SRD Grant?

To qualify for the SRD grant in South Africa, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or holder of a special permit.
  • Not be receiving any other form of government support, such as UIF benefits or an NSFAS bursary.
  • Have a monthly income of less than R624.
  • Have a bank account balance below R624.

How Sassa Verifies Eligibility for the SRD Grant

Sassa conducts verification checks in June to ensure that applicants meet the eligibility requirements for the SRD grant.

The Department of Home Affairs verifies applicants' identity and citizenship, while the Department of Treasury checks income using the applicant's banking information. Once eligibility is confirmed, payments are processed and typically issued at the end of each month.

How to Apply for the SRD Grant

To apply for the SRD grant, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official SRD grant website.
  2. Select your citizenship status at the bottom of the page: “South African ID Holder” or “Asylum Seeker/Special Permit Holder.”
  3. Click on the yellow bar labelled “Click here to apply online” under the appropriate section.
  4. Enter your mobile number and click “Send SMS.”
  5. Enter the one-time pin (OTP) sent to your phone by Sassa to verify your number.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your application.

Once approved, recipients can opt to have their SRD grant payments deposited directly into their bank accounts or collected at participating retailers such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, USave, Shoprite, OK, and Spar.
